The 2022 Osun State gubernatorial election took identify on 16 July 2022,[i] to elect the governor of Osun State.

The primaries, scheduled for between xvi February and 12 March, resulted in Oyetola winning the APC nomination for a second time, albeit among outcry from his main challengers.[ii] For the main opposition PDP, longtime internal disputes led to two parallel primaries beingness held as a faction nominated sometime senatorial candidate Dotun Babayemi while the faction recognized by the national PDP nominated one-time Senator for Osun West Ademola Adeleke, the political party's 2018 nominee. As the Independent National Electoral Commission simply observed the primary that nominated Adeleke, he was recognized as the legitimate PDP nominee.

Balloter system [edit]

The governor of Osun State is elected using a modified ii-round organization. To be elected in the first circular, a candidate must receive the plurality of the vote and over 25% of the vote in at least 2-thirds of state local authorities areas. If no candidate passes this threshold, a 2d round will be held between the top candidate and the next candidate to have received a plurality of votes in the highest number of local regime areas.

Groundwork [edit]

Osun Land is a pocket-size, Yoruba-majority southwestern state with vast natural areas and rich cultural heritage but facing an underdeveloped agricultural sector and high debt.

Politically, Oyetola'southward close 2018 victory was a forerunner of the state'due south competitiveness in the 2019 elections with presidential incumbent Muhammadu Buhari barely winning the state back and all three Senate races being fairly shut. Of the Senate elections, two seats went to the APC and 1 went to the PDP while the Firm of Representatives elections went 6 APC and 3 PDP. Contrastly, the APC won a large bulk in the Country House of Assembly.

At the beginning of Oyetola's term, his promises included completing in-progress projects, full payment of civil retainer salaries, and further developing his predecessor's welfare programs.[iii] [4] In terms of his performance, Oyetola was commended for mining evolution merely was criticized for declaring numerous public holidays and failing to pay pensions.[5] [vi] [seven] Oyetola also came under force per unit area when the Pandora Papers revealed that he had bought a London mansion from an international fugitive wanted for money laundering using a British Virgin Islands-based offshore company as Nigerian authorities were attempting to freeze the fugitive's avails.[8]

Primary elections [edit]

The primaries, forth with any potential challenges to primary results, were scheduled for betwixt February sixteen and March 12.[1] According to some candidates and customs leaders, an informal zoning gentlemen'south agreement should have prepare the Osun W Senatorial District to have the side by side governor as since the 1999 render of republic, all Osun governors have come up from either the Osun East or Osun Central Senatorial Districts. While the PDP ended up nominating Adelake, a westerner, Oyetola was renominated past the APC despite his Fundamental origins.

All Progressives Congress [edit]

Although there were rumors of a rift between Governor Oyetola and quondam Governor Rauf Aregbesola that could lead to Oyetola failing to be renominated,[ix] [ten] Osun APC Chairman Gboyega Famodun claimed that Oyetola was widely accustomed throughout the country and local APC capacity and thus would have the back up of the state party.[eleven] However, the Osun State APC later factionalized between the Oyetola-aligned IleriOluwa faction (chaired by Famodun) and the Aregbesola-aligned The Osun Progressives faction (chaired by Rasaq Salinsile).[12] [13] Despite outside attempts at reconciliation, the party crisis deepened by Jan 2022 and the threat of 2 parallel primaries loomed as Oyetola registered to run in the IleriOluwa APC while challengers registered to run in the TOP APC.[14] Somewhen, the IleriOluwa faction was recognized by the national APC and the primary continued inside it equally Aregbesola endorsed challenger Moshood Adeoti while Oyetola began his campaign for a second term.[xv]

In January 2022, the APC rescheduled its principal for Feb nineteen with the expression of involvement form costing ₦2.v meg and the nomination form costing ₦20 one thousand thousand; a fifty% discount would be provided to women candidates and candidates with disabilities. The party too rescheduled its candidate screening and screening appeal process for February 10 and 15, respectively.[16] Different dates had been announced in Nov but the dates were changed after national revision.[17] [18]

In the days earlier the election, the Oyetola-Aregbesola feud escalated later on Aregbesola formally endorsed Adeoti on Feb 14. Aregbesola then claimed that his convoy was attacked subsequently that day in an assassination endeavor while the police force and Oyetola assistants claimed that Aregbesola's guards shot into the air without whatsoever provocation.[19] The next day, Aregbesola allies claimed that they had uncovered a new plot to kill Aregbesola by "country regime-sponsored political thugs," thus indirectly accusing Oyetola of organizing the bump-off plots.[20] These incidents pb to fears that the principal could be marred by violence despite the increased security presence during the practise.[21] Thankfully, the exercise was mainly peaceful, albeit with one person being shot dead over a non-ballot related dispute according to constabulary.[22] In the early morning time of Feb 20, caput of the main commission and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq alleged Oyetola every bit the APC nominee after announced results showed him defeating Adeoti and former House Deputy Speaker Yusuf Sulaimon Lasun by over 200,000 votes with sixty% turnout.[2] Before the results were even announced, Adeoti and his allies rejected the primary wholeheartedly with his supporters claiming that their names were purposefully left off registers, others observing that INEC officials were absent from units, and Aregbesola calling the main a "sham of an election."[23] For their part, Oyetola supporters backed the do'due south fairness and Oyetola himself called for party unity the day after the primary.[24] [25] Prior to taking exterior legal action, Adeoti appealed to the APC chief election appeal committee which denied his appeal;[26] accordingly, Adeoti then asked a Federal High Courtroom in Abuja to declare him winner.[27] The case was non resolved until 14 July when Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo dismissed the lawsuit.[28]

By 2021, Ademola Adeleke, the 2018 PDP nominee, had already received the support of the national PDP with party officials claiming he has finer been given the nomination according to PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary Duran Odeyemi.[35] Nonetheless, the state PDP claimed that while "the bulk of our party stakeholders" were supporting Adeleke, all contenders were immune to run in the main. This cess became contested every bit the state party afterward factionalized between the Adeleke-supporting faction (chaired by Lord's day Bisi) and the faction aligned with the other five candidates (chaired by Wale Ojo).[13] Another internal battle was sparked in January 2022 when a dispute between Ademola and Dele Adeleke—both members of the powerful Adeleke political family of Ede—escalated and tied in popular musician Davido, cousin of Dele and nephew of Ademola, who has supported Ademola since 2018 and attacked Dele on social media.[36]
